The Union and Confederate troops moved through Harpers Ferry quite frequently due to its strategic location on the railroad and the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley.

The lower part of Harpers Ferry is located within Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Most of the remainder of the town is included in a separate Harpers Ferry Historic District. The B & O Railroad Potomac River Crossing and St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, both properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places adjoin the town.
