Greencastle, founded in 1782 by John Allison, is one of Pennsylvania’s most historic neighborhoods. Located in south-central PA, Greencastle is a borough in Franklin County. Greencastle and neighboring Franklin County communities raised the 126th Pennsylvania Infantry early in the Civil War. The war touched close to home in the summer of 1863 when General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia invaded southern Pennsylvania. The invasion became known as the Gettysburg Campaign. The residents of Greencastle who had not fled to safety lived under Confederate rule from mid-June to early July.

Late in the 19th century, after the war, Greencastle grew considerably. During the Industrial Revolution, several industrial factories were built inside the town limits. Every three years, there is a town-wide reunion of current and former residents, known as “Old Home Week.” Greencastle businessman Philip Baer started the triennial tradition in 1902.
