Chambersburg, PA

The county seat of Franklin County, Chambersburg is the historic and commercial center of the region. Characterized by varied small and medium industrial enterprises, Chambersburg is a rich agricultural and residential area.

Chambersburg’s settlement began in 1730 by Benjamin Chambers. The confluence of Conococheaque Creek and Falling Spring provided Chambers with the waterpower needed to operate a gristmill and a sawmill. Formally laid out in 1764 by Colonel Chambers, the community extended south and east from the fort that had been built for protection against Indian raids.

In 1803, the municipal government was established through a state granted charter as a borough. During the Civil War, Chambersburg, PA was occupied three times by Confederate forces. The Chambersburg borough as the only major northern community burned down by Confederate forces. Chambersburg was rebuilt with a combination of state and private funding.

Chambersburg is located along the Lincoln Highway, U.S. 30, between McConnellsburg and Gettysburg, PA and along U.S. 11, the Molly Pitcher Highway, between Shippensburg, PA and Hagerstown, MD. Interstate 81 borders the borough to the east. It is 13 miles north of Maryland and the Mason-Dixon line.

The large farming population surrounding the area includes Amish and Mennonite families. The largest crop in Franklin County is corn with 579 farms covering almost 30,000 acres. Franklin County also has 344 wheat farms and 299 barley farms. Much of the economy of the Chambersburg area is still largely based on agricultural.

In 1927, the Capitol Theatre was opened as a movie palace. It reopened in 2003 as the Capitol Theatre Center. Chambersburg ranked among Newsmax magazine’s list of the “Top 25 Most Uniquely American Cities and Towns,” by Peter Greenberg. Greenberg cited that the Capitol Theatre determined his ranking.
